Texas TDLR Continuing Education Requirements
Electrician License Renewals - For holders of an Electricians licenses, four (4) hours of TDLR approved continuing education courses is required to renew that license. The required hours must cover the National Electrical Code (NEC), Electrician Safety, and Texas state electrician law and rules.
Apprentice Electricians are also now required to complete four (4) hours of TDLR approved continuing education courses or be enrolled in a Department of Labor approved Apprenticeship Training Program (for licenses that expire on or after Sept 1, 2010)
NOTE: Electrical Contractors, and Electrical Sign Contractors are not required to meet the continuing education requirement for renewal.
CE Course Completion Requirements - Continuing Education courses must be completed within the term of the license being renewed. For example, if a license expires on June 15, 2006, the continuing education courses taken to renew that license must have been taken between June 15, 2005 and June 15, 2006.
For a late renewal, the continuing education courses must have been completed within the one year period immediately prior to the date of renewal.
Licensees may not receive continuing education credit for attending the same course more than once for one renewal period. Further, licensees must retain a copy of the certificate of completion for a course for one year after the date of completion. In conducting any inspection or investigation of the licensee, the department may examine the licensee's records to determine compliance.
How Do I Renew My License? - Completion of this Continuing Education Course does not renew your License - You must renew your license directly with the licensing agency. We cannot renew your license for you. There are two ways to renew your license:
Renew Online - The easiest way to renew your license is to renew online. The Report Notification email that we send you has a link directly to the online renewal site. You can update your information and pay your renewal fees online and, since we report your CE credit electronically, you do not need to mail a CE Certificate of Completion in. Renewing online is the fastest way to renew your license.
Renew By Mail - If you cannot renew online, you may send in the renewal application via mail. You must print a Continuing Education Certificate of Completion (available after you complete your course) and mail it in with your renewal application and renewal fee. Unfortunately, we are not able to mail you a Certificate of Completion - you must print it from the Course Menu after you complete your course.
We are providing the above License Renewal information as a service to you. Unfortunately, we cannot answer any questions about your license renewal. Please address all renewal questions directly to the Licensing Agency.
